Illinois offers more than 270 hiking trails that span over 700 miles, providing options for both residents and visitors throughout the state. The hiking season in Illinois is typically best during spring and fall, when temperatures are milder and conditions are favorable for outdoor activities. Fall is often considered the ideal time to hike due to cooler weather and colorful foliage.
Among the state's notable long-distance trails are the Hennepin Canal State Trail, which covers 155 miles across five counties from Rock River to Illinois River; the Illinois and Michigan Canal, offering 61.5 miles of scenic paths in northeastern Illinois; and the Rock Island Trail, a 27-mile route connecting Alta in Peoria County to Toulon in Stark County.
Starved Rock State Park is one of Illinois’ most popular hiking destinations. Located on the Illinois River near Ottawa and Oglesby, it features 13 miles of interconnected trails along with canyons and waterfalls. Trails at Starved Rock are open from dawn to dusk and welcome pets on leashes. According to one blogger, "Starved Rock offers incredible fall foliage, glowing canyons, and active wildlife in the fall." The park’s amenities and lodging options also attract many visitors.
Southern Illinois provides additional opportunities for hikers around Shawnee National Forest. This area includes trails such as Little Grand Canyon Trail and Jackson Falls Trail. Garden of the Gods Observation Trail is known for its sandstone formations that date back over 300 million years. Fern Clyffe State Park near Goreville has several scenic trails including Happy Hollow Trail. Other locations like Bell Smith Springs, Giant City State Park near Carbondale, and Olin Nature Preserve offer further hiking experiences.
Lists ranking top hiking spots frequently mention Starved Rock State Park alongside Lakefront Trail, Waterfall Glen Forest Preserve, Swallow Cliff Stairs, Busse Woods Trail System, Garden of the Gods Observation Trail, Little Grand Canyon Trail, Bell Smith Springs Recreation Area, Pomona Natural Bridge, Matthiessen State Park, Devil’s Lake, and Rock Cut State Park.
Hikers are advised to prepare appropriately by wearing suitable clothing for current weather conditions as well as proper footwear. Insect protection is recommended due to mosquitoes and ticks present on some trails. Carrying water and food is essential for longer hikes. Pets should be kept on leashes at all times.
The benefits of hiking extend beyond physical exercise; spending time outdoors can improve mental health and mood. Hiking with friends or groups not only enhances safety but also fosters social connections through shared experiences.
