Granite City's Graphic Review Board denies request for a large graphic sign

Meeting

The Graphic Review Board for Granite City, Illinois met recently to discuss a petitioner’s request for a large graphic sign, a move that would require changing the non-conforming sign ordinance.

After approving the minutes from the board’s previous meeting the board chair introduced the petitioner. Roy Williams III, vice president and regional director for Highland Ventures LTD, asked the board to review the non-conforming sign ordinance, hoping to get a 20-foot pole sign with 99.87 square feet of graphic space at 3102 Nameoki Rd. The sign would be very beneficial to the Highland Ventues businesses, Bryan Dunning, district manager for Highland Ventures, said.

The property is an area zoned for C-5 Highway Commercial.

Following the presentation and conversation among the board members, a motion was brought to approve the petition and grant Highland Ventures the signage. The motion was voted on and failed. One criticism of the petition was that the proposed sign was more than double what was allowed.

Members present at the meeting included John Janek, Martha Burich and Sharon Ryan. Also present were City Attorney Laura Andrews and Building Inspector Ralph Walden.
