Madison County chairman, Edwardsville mayor assist Mississippi River flood relief.
Madison County Chairman Alan Dunstan and Edwardsville Mayor Hal Patton have joined volunteer efforts as floodwaters from the swollen Mississippi River continue to rise.
Volunteers have been working around the clock filling and placing sandbags, trying to mitigate damage to the downtown area of the City of Alton. At a staging area near West Broadway, the mayor and chairman spent Monday and Tuesday evening helping out.
Dunstan had spent the previous four days inspecting flood areas throughout the county, meeting with officials to determine what additional assistance Madison County could give. Patton came to the sandbagging site after 12-hour shifts at his dental practice.
Larry Ringering, director of Madison County Emergency Management Agency, and Matt Taul, Edwardsville's public works supervisor, also assisted in the sandbagging effort. Taul was joined by his wife and son.
