The Cougars have clawed their way into the Learfield Directors' Cup rankings for the first time, according to Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville's (SIUE) website.
SIUE ranked 94th in the list of 100 Division I programs. Points are awarded in up to 10 men's and women's sports categories, and the Cougars scored in five of them: men's indoor track and field, men's and women's soccer, wrestling and women's tennis.
The Cougars placed higher than any other team in the three conferences in which it competed this year: Ohio Valley, Missouri Valley and Southern. SIUE has been a Division I program since 2012-2013.
Dr. Brad Hewitt, SIUE Athletic Director
"We are very proud of our finish in the Learfield Directors' Cup," Brad Hewitt, SIUE's director of athletics, said in the posting. "Not only did these teams play at a high level, they excelled against their direct peers as well as several nationally-prominent programs."
During the 2016-2017 season, SIUE's men's soccer team advanced to the Sweet Sixteen, while women's soccer made it to the second-round of the NCAA Championships. The women's tennis team made it to the NCAA Championships, while the men's indoor track and field and wrestling teams earned All-American honors.
