Metro East Taxpayers urges 'no' vote on proposed school facilities tax

Vote 07

As voters in Madison County head to the polls March 20 to vote on the proposed 1 percent school facilities sales tax, opponents of the measure are voicing their disdain over any type of new tax.

One of the groups leading the opposition to the tax is the Metro East Taxpayers organization, which calls itself "a group of concerned citizens who fight for Metro East." The group has been encouraging Madison County residents and Facebook followers to reject the upcoming proposal by voting "no."

"We hope you'll share the message that new taxes, double barrel bond debt, & ZERO guarantee of property tax relief is not the right solution for our community or schools," the group posted on its Facebook page.

"Once enacted, this tax CANNOT be removed by the voters. The voters of Madison County have rejected this tax twice already. Let’s do it again!" Nancy Moss commented on the Metro East Taxpayer Facebook post.

Previous proposals to increase the sales tax to fund school construction, maintenance, renovation and debt have appeared on ballots in  2011 and 2017 but were rejected by Madison County residents.

"Madison county has got to be one of the most tax burdened counties in The state. NO TO MORE TAXES!!!!!!" wrote Donald McDaniel on the group's post.
