New Athens Fire Protection District responded to 23 calls in 2017 - 32.4 percent less than the previous year, according to data from the National Fire Incident Reporting System.

The calls in New Athens included 21 fires - five structure fires, seven vehicle fires and nine other fires.

In all, the department saw $403,500 in fire loss - or about $19,214 per fire.

The department also received two false calls.

The calls resulted in one civilian fire-related death.

The New Athens Fire Protection District had an annual budget of $334,625 in 2017.
