Newly-elected GOP state Rep. Amy Elik (R-Alton) is hoping the stance taken by Republicans in the early days of the new session come to set the tone for a new Springfield.

“House rules are the first vote we take,” Elik said in a Reimagine Illinois video posted to YouTube. “It governs all the procedures and details of how we can actually conduct business in the House.”

With Mike Madigan no longer calling all the shots in Springfield after roughly four decades of total rule as House Speaker, Elik argues the time for Republican lawmakers to have their voices heard is now.

“The minority party consists of 45 House Republicans,” she said. “The goal of the minority party is to always advocate for the people of Illinois.”

With that in mind, Elik is among a growing contingent of Republican legislators now pushing their Reimagine Illinois plan.

“I think that changing the balance of power will benefit all the citizens of Illinois,” she added, highlighting that the plan being pushed by Republican lawmakers calls for a Springfield free of corruption and a government guided by greater fiscal responsibility.

Given all the state’s growing dysfunction, Elik and company are hoping enough voters are ready for the change so many of them insist they want to see in government.

“We invite you to take a tour of our Reimagined Illinois and if you agree it’s time for a change, sign our petition,” the group posted on its website. “It’s time to Imagine an Illinois where corruption isn’t making headlines and lawmakers are held accountable, where leaders take their fiscal responsibility seriously, watching every penny instead of trying to raise taxes year-after-year.”
