In less than three years, the United States is preparing to celebrate its 250th birthday, also known as the Semiquincentennial. The journey towards this historic milestone is an opportunity for reflection, honoring the contributions of all Americans, and looking towards the future.

The U.S. Semiquincentennial Commission, established by Congress in 2016, is diligently planning and organizing the 250th anniversary of the nation's founding. The commission aims to engage Americans across the country in designing the largest and most inclusive anniversary observance in the nation's history.

As part of the commemoration, America 250 is inviting Americans from all walks of life to share their stories through various mediums such as photos, videos, artwork, poems, and songs. These contributions will be showcased on the official America 250 website, in videos, and on social media platforms, highlighting what makes America unique and ensuring that everyone is included in the celebration.

Illinois is one of the 38 states that have established a Semiquincentennial Commission, with the principal purpose of planning, promoting, and implementing appropriate commemoration activities for the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States.

Representative Brad Halbrook (R-Shelbyville) emphasized the significance of this milestone, stating, "There is no more important moment in our nation's history than the signing of the Declaration of Independence. We do not become the United States of America without declaring our independence from British rule. There should be a real and lasting celebration to commemorate the 250th birthday of the founding of our country."

Representative Tom Weber (R-Lake Villa) echoed this sentiment, highlighting the foresight and actions of the nation's founders, stating, "The founders of America had a providential view of history. Their foresight and steadfast actions brought forth the Declaration of Independence. All Americans should take pride in the upcoming 250th birthday celebration for our nation."

The American Association for State and Local History, a national professional association dedicated to supporting the history community, has established several themes for America's 250th birthday celebration. These themes include Unfinished Revolutions, Power of Place, We the People, American Experiment, and Doing History. The aim is to ensure that Americans of all ages and backgrounds see themselves in history and for history organizations to enhance their impact and relevance in their communities.

With local, state, and national entities coming together, the Semiquincentennial promises to be a truly remarkable experience. The planning and preparations underway will ensure that the 250th anniversary of the United States' founding is a celebration that honors the past, embraces the present, and looks towards a bright future for the nation and its people.
