U.S. Representative Mike Bost of Illinois cast his vote on Thursday in favor of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, a significant piece of legislation that aims to make permanent the tax relief measures introduced during President Trump's first term. The bill, which also allocates resources for border security and seeks to reduce government spending, is now awaiting the President's signature. President Trump has committed to signing it into law by Independence Day.
Bost stated, "President Trump and conservative majorities in Congress were elected to shut down the border invasion and put America’s taxpayers first. I voted to lock in the Trump tax cuts and avert the largest tax hike in our nation’s history, while securing the border and kicking fraudsters off benefits intended for families in need. I’m proud to work closely with President Trump to deliver on our promises to the American people."
The legislation was crafted through budget reconciliation in the House and later amended by the Senate. It proposes comprehensive reforms aimed at bolstering economic growth, enhancing national security, and promoting energy independence.
Key components of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act include:
- Permanent extension of Trump-era tax cuts, preventing a 22 percent tax increase.
- Elimination of taxes on tips and overtime while increasing deductions for seniors.
- Allocation of over $175 billion for border security efforts, including completion of the border wall and hiring thousands of new Border Patrol and customs officers.
- Strengthening work requirements for healthy, working-age SNAP and Medicaid beneficiaries to ensure benefits are preserved for those truly in need.
- Repeal of Green New Deal programs such as the Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund.
- Termination of taxpayer funding for abortions.
