U.S. Rep. John Shimkus (R-IL) spoke out against President Obama's recent veto of the proposed National Defense Authorization Act.
White House officials have said the president's veto was largely motivated by concerns over increasing military spending without first funding the president's domestic agenda.
“If he was vetoing it because we’re not authorizing enough money…if he were vetoing it because he doesn’t like that we’re going to authorize military equipment to Ukraine…if there were really policy issues, we could work through that," Shimkus said. "But to use this as a sacrificial lamb, and cry that he’s not getting money in the (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency) or the Department of Energy or Health and Human Services, is just wrong. I think it sends a bad signal to our young men and women who are deployed in our country and around the world saying ‘what is the Commander-in-Chief thinking about?’”
The proposed $611.8 billion budget funds all military and defense related activities for the U.S.
The bill now moves back to Congress for further debate.
