Belleville FD responds to 176 fires in 2016

Belleville Fire Department responded to 675 calls in 2016, according to data from the National Fire Incident Reporting System obtained by the Metro East Sun.

The calls in Belleville included 176 fires - 83 structure fires, 37 vehicle fires and 43 other fires. The fire department also responded to 13 calls for ruptures, explosions or overheating.

In all, the department saw $1,447,000 in fire loss - or about $8,222 per fire.

The department also received 499 false calls.

The calls resulted in one civilian fire-related death.

The Belleville Firefighters' Pension Fund, which has 61 active employees and 67 retired or inactive employees, was $3,438,275 in debt as of April 2016, according to the fund's mandated filings with the Illinois Department of Insurance. That amounts to $19,536 for every fire in 2016.
