State Sen. Steve McClure (R-Springfield) said he didn't agree with the $1.6 billion in new spending that Gov. J.B. Pritzker proposed in his budget address last month.

"It's $1.6 billion in new spending and it's constantly, 'hey we’ve got all these new programs,' but its incumbent on the taxpayer to pay for these things and yet the government also needs to make sacrifices," McClure said. "You can’t constantly ask the taxpayers to make sacrifices after adding tax increases and say we need more, but yet we’re not going to do anything to be more efficient."

McClure said the governor said in September that he wanted a 6.5% reduction in operating expenses.

"Instead of trying to implement all those cuts—which would save us all money, it's always, 'no give us more, but we’re not going to make sacrifices ourselves.' That’s not right," McClure said.
