Jason Plummer, an Edwardsville Republican seeking the state Senate seat in District 54, said he enjoys a simple Christmas celebration.
“If I can eat a nice meal and spend time with my family I am pretty content,” Plummer told the Metro East Sun.
“Our Christmases are pretty low-key. We love Christmas. We love putting up decorations and all that but it is more about the real meaning of Christmas. We don’t like it getting too commercialized and everything.,” he added.
Even if they don’t plan a huge gathering, Plummer said there are a few traditions that he looks forward to.
“We get together on Christmas Eve. We always watch the classic 'National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation' and always enjoy going to the nativity scene at church: the same thing other people do," he said. “We have a large artificial tree with all the ornaments and that kind of stuff, but each year my dad and I like to go out and find a natural tree. I think it is something that when he was younger he and his dad did as well.”
Plummer said there are also some favorite foods served up at Christmas dinner.
“I am a sweet potato guy but I don’t discriminate I’ll take sweet potatoes all year long, it doesn’t have to be Christmas but it is just Christmas time that we tend to see those pop out,” he said.
He added that his favorite dessert is “any pie baked by my mom.”
But the most important aspect of the season for Plummer is giving. “Usually, every Christmas there are several hundred toys that we have collected personally or through our business. That is much more meaningful than any one random toy or so,” he said
Plummer is running in the 54th District for the seat held by Sen. Kyle McCarter (R-Lebanon), who is not seeking re-election. The district includes part or all of Bond, Clinton, Effingham, Fayette, Madison, Marion, St. Clair and Washington counties.
